O God, we remember when the disciples of Jesus were terrified after a long night on a turbulent sea. When they cried to you for help, you stilled the sea and brought them to safety. We ask now that you comfort and still the hearts of those who are suffering in Haiti. We pray for those who have been displaced and who now must return to homes that are destroyed or damaged. We pray for those whose lives were lost and for those who now must grieve the loss of a loved one. We pray for those who are attempting to offer help and relief to victims. While we wonder why such devastation can occur, where lives and property can seem held so capriciously in the hand of what is uncontrollable, we know, O God, that you count every hair on our head and that our names are written on the palm of your hand. Let your loving grace wash over those who must now face damaged lives, homes, and possessions. Hold them close to yourself until they are sure of the security of your loving embrace. Calm their hearts and still their souls, O Lord. We ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. (Explore faith.org)

FROM THE RECTOR'S DESK:

Beloveds in Christ,

Have you read our Annual Parish Reports for 2009? In it, members of our Vestry and staff do our best to detail both all that happens here and what all that happens here costs. This seems to us to be the most responsible approach in these times of financial challenges.

Frances read my “Rector’s Annual Report for 2009” and said, “This is the most boring thing you’ve ever written!” Although I tried to say how I’d done my best to put “treasure” where “heart is” in 2009, I took her review as a great compliment of my reports in previous years in which I told stories of the highlights of those years. This time next year I hope you will have in hand what I think have been the most memorable and important happenings here in 2010.

FAREWELL, TIM
WELCOME, DAVID

Editor’s note: As Tim departs for an exciting opportunity in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have an interim mimister of music, David Clemensen, join us this month. In Tim’s final “Sharps & Flats” column below. he graciously hands the baton (sorry, couldn’t resist) to David.

by Tim Getz

By now you have no doubt heard the news that I have accepted a new position as Music Director at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto. I am thrilled about this new opportunity but also very, very sad to leave behind this loving and joy-filled community at Saint Michael & All Angels
.
We have laid some wonderful musical groundwork together. We have all grown in enjoyment and appreciation of a wider variety of music as a part of our common prayer, and we sing wonderfully well together.

I have every hope and expectation that in the coming months and years Saint Michael & All Angels’ commitment and enthusiasm for great liturgical music will continue to flourish.
This month you will meet our interim Minister of Music, David Clemensen. David and I have been friends for several years and I know you will enjoy getting to know him.

He has a doctorate in collaborative piano from USC and is accompanist for Pacific Chorale. David has served several churches in our area; most recently at Saint Mark Presbyterian Church as interim organist while their regular organist recovered from surgery following an auto accident.

David has often “borrowed” our organ and grand piano for practice during the week and has substituted for me on a number of occasions. He has experience working with choirs of all levels. I believe he will provide a wonderful, pastoral, and relatively seamless transition while our parish discerns the future of its music program.

One of your first opportunities to meet and hear David will be at this month’s “First Sundays at Four” evensong service. (Coincidentally, he was scheduled to play long before I had even applied for my new job!) On Sunday, February 7th at 4:00 p.m.—if you were looking for an alternative to the Super Bowl, this is it!—David, along with our own Desmond Stevens on clarinet, flutist Mary Palchak, and bassoonist David Muller, will perform the Evensong Suite by Alex Shapiro. This beautiful, melodic piece of music was commissioned in 1999 by St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Mar Vista. Its six movements are intended to accompany and invoke the moods of various parts of the evening service. All are invited to the service and the reception afterward!

My last Sunday with you will be February 14th, the last Sunday after the Epiphany.

It will be a very musical day including the participation of our adult, children’s, and handbell choirs. I do hope you’ll be here, not just to say good-bye but to celebrate our various music ministries and to look forward to the future.

As I did in my annual report, I’d like to end simply by saying thank you. For your loving friendship and support, I thank you. For your companionship on the Christian pilgrimage, I thank you. For outstanding chili of every color, with and without beans, I thank you. Most of all for singing and praying with me, Sunday by Sunday and year by year, I thank you. I love you and will miss you. And whenever you find yourself on the San Francisco peninsula, stop by and visit!

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE 2011
By Lynn Headley

In response to our Rector’s challenge: “Why can’t we get a group together for a Holy Land Pilgrimage?” after hearing Andy Guilford give a fascinating account of his recent Pilgrimage, several of our parishioners have come forward saying they are interested in participating in a pilgrimage.

THE FOYER PROGRAM

At the beginning of the year members of Saint Michael and All Angels’ Christian Family are invited to become part of the FOYER PROGRAM. All adults can join: men, women, singles, couples, anyone who wants to make some new, lasting friendships
.
Saturday, February 27th at 6:30pm in Michael’s Room is this year’s organizational get-together. We will meet for a POT-LUCK DINNER, and spend four or five times together throughout the year.

Those who want to join this friendship-building group will be assigned to a group of 6,7, or 8 others for the whole year. The groups then meet, taking turns as host for a couple of hours for a meal anywhere the hosts would like. This can be as simple or fancy as you want. Foyers have met happily in one room apartments, on the beach, on a boat, and in the park for picnics. There are no set agendas or assigned project or topics of conversation. Members get to know each other, and at the end of the year if you choose to remain in Foyers, groups are reassigned and the cycle begins all over with new and different people to get to know.

If the FOYER PROGRAM appeals to you and you like the idea of making new friends, pick up an application form outside church on Sunday, or if you want more information call the Jordan’s: 949-760-2670 or Teri Corbet: 714-964-5505. You need to be assigned to a group of other very special people who are anxious to get to know you, too.
