FROM THE RECTOR'S DESK:
Last month, wearing my "hats" as representative from our province to our national church’s Companion Diocese Network and as founding convener of our diocese’s World Mission Group, I was privileged to attend a conference at The Maritime Institute in Baltimore called "Everyone Everywhere 2008".(Read the entire article about the Milennium Development Goals here.).mount-calvary.or
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE LAMBETH CONFERENCE
The Anglican Communion’s 2008 Lambeth Conference begins on July 17th and runs through August 3rd. This is the first of a two part article from Episcopal Life detailing the history of the Conference. Part 2 will run in August. (Read it here)

ST. MIKE’S AND MARINES AID
AFGHAN CHILDREN
Using approximately $300 from the recent Silent Auction, the St. Mike’s Mission Commission sent 260 jackets, sweaters, and jeans to Major Thomas Ross, USMC, which he will give to U.S. Marines acting as advisors to the Afghan Army to distribute to children in the Tagab district in the Kapisa providence of eastern Afghanistan.
Major Ross wrote this note of thanks to Mission Commission Chair Tammy Smecker-Hane:
Ms. Smecker-Hane,
I truly apologize for the delay in responding to your email. I have been traveling throughout Afghanistan’s eastern region and have recently returned. During the trip I personally witnessed hundreds of children who would benefit from your donations. The Marine advisors here, to a man, constantly express the desire to help the children of Afghanistan in any way possible. I am certain that we can find some very deserving children to receive your gifts. In fact one of the projects that the Marines are currently engaged with is in the development of the Tagab district in the Kapisa province. The majority of the population are subsistence farmers and live in extremely austere conditions. The Marines are working with our Afghan counterparts to bring national capacity to this area in an effort to improve the quality of life for the average Tagab citizen. Your church’s gifts would be a boon for this endeavor. If you are still prepared to donate the clothing I can get it to the children of Tagab.
.
Thank you for your generosity. Believe me it does not go unnoticed by the service members here.
Semper Fidelis,
Major Thomas Ross, USMC

MYSTERIOUS SUMMER 2008
By Norris Battin
While there was a dearth of new Anglican/Episcopal detective fiction during the past year from my favorite authors, our friends at the Religious Mysteries Web site at The Church of Our Saviour in Secaucus, NJ did provide me with three new summaries that I have again shamelessly copied:
“Beware False Profits (Ministry is Murder Mystery)” (Paperback) Nov 2007. By Emilie Richards
There’s no rest for the weary. Aggie Sloan-Wilcox and her minister husband, were praying for a relaxing weekend until a member of their flock went missing. Joe Wagner, president of Emerald Springs’s food bank, disappears, and Aggie discovers his secret life as a female impersonator. Meanwhile, the murder of the mayor’s wife at the annual food bank fundraiser puts Joe on top of the suspect list. If Aggie doesn’t get to the bottom of things fast, she’ll be leading a choir singing the blues.
“The Fabric of Sin” (Merrily Watkins Mysteries) (Hardcover) Nov 2007 By Phil Rickman
Called in secretly to investigate an allegedly haunted house with royal connections, Merrily Watkins, deliverance consultant for the Diocese of Hereford, is exposed to a real and tangible evil. A hidden valley on the border of England and Wales preserves a longtime feud between two old border families as well as an ancient Templar church with a secret that may be linked to a famous ghost story.
“The Mezzo Wore Mink” by Mark Schweizer / Paperback / Feb 2008
Autumn in St. Germaine, North Carolina, is an enchanting time of year. But throw in two murders, an election, a Christian nudist camp, and St. Barnabas’ answer to the local Baptist church’s annual Singing Christmas Tree — the first-ever performance of The Living Gobbler — and things are bound to become complicated.
There are lots of other great titles on this site, so have a look. Also, here’s a new (for me) site I found while researching this article. It’s called Clerical Detectives, and features 56 detective-clerics. Happy sleuthing!
PRAYERS FOR THIS LIFE
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will.
Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners.
Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues.
Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth
.
In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
---Prayer No.18,”
For Our Country,” BCP page 820.
